What wedding favours do I choose?

Carefully chosen and appealingly presented wedding favours are another popular way of making guests feel welcome, as well as serving the practical purpose of indicating which seat they should occupy at their table.

Small gifts given by a bride to her female guests as mementoes of her wedding have long been part of Italian tradition.

These generally took the form of bonbonnières, delicately prepared packets containing five sugared almonds symbolising health, wealth, happiness, long life and fertility.

From these has developed the practice of giving guests a wedding favour, often in the form of a simple gift beautifully presented as an individual place setting.

Although wedding favours were traditionally confined to female guests, today an increasing number of brides are presenting them to male and female guests alike.

Nor do wedding favours always need to take the form of edible gifts.

Anything that will recall the happy occasion the wedding favour symbolises can be called upon to serve the purpose and here a link with the wedding theme or the time of year it is held will enhance the sense of occasion.

A selection of bulbs that will flower in the spring could be a delightful favour recalling an autumn wedding.

Miniature bottles of warming liqueurs might serve as favours for a winter wedding.

Small, mouth-watering chocolate eggs would immediately bring an Easter wedding to mind, while scented candles for al fresco nights in the garden might recall a glorious summer wedding.

Presenting guests with wedding favours also allows a bride to add a personal touch to an individual place setting by placing a hand-written name card in each favour, thereby linking where each guest sits with his or her participation in a truly memorable day.
